Rajasthan Royals Captain Sanju Samson all set to surpass Gautam Gambhir’s T20 record

Following a 2-0 sweep against England, Team India is eyeing a three-peat and adding one more to secure the five-match series. But as the bonanza heads to Rajkot on Tuesday, February 28, all eyes are on India’s heavy hitter – Sanju Samson.

The 30-year-old is gearing up for the third fray and is just 92 runs away from surpassing head coach Gautam Gambhir’s T20 record.

‘Sanju’ 92 runs away from creating history

Despite a respectable quick-fire knock from the right-handed batter in the opening match, the Keralite failed to register a double-digit score in the second.

However, as the series winds up to the third match of the series, Sanju Samson  is keen on losing the previous slump and redeem himself. While the batsman is honing his skills to take on the fierce British bowling attack, Tuesday’s match presents him an opportunity to go cement his legacy.

Samson is just 92 runs away from surpassing Gambhir’s record in the short format. Having amassed 841 runs from 39 T20Is to date, the opener is on the verge of surpassing Gambhir in the list of batsmen with the most runs in the 20-over format.

Gambhir ended his career six years back in 2018, 68 runs short of 1000, with 932 T20I runs. Having made his international debut back in 2015, Samson faced setbacks one after the other – finding himself outside the national team in the following years.

Fortunately, his explosive performances at RR in the Indian Premier League and on foreign soil have solidified his presence in the national team. His three centuries last year and his notable contribution to India’s T20 World Cup triumph are a testament to his skill.

Not to mention the fact that the wicketkeeper has been more consistent with the bat, lately under Gambhir’s watch. All it requires is a brilliant knock and Samson is in the halls of fame along with his legendary peers.
