The 18th season of IPL 2025 is set to begin on March 22. Defending champions Kolkata Knights Riders are expected to announce their new captain soon for the upcoming season. Last year, Shreyas Iyer led KKR to the title, but the franchise did not retain him IPL 2025. KKR bought India’s former test captain Ajinkya Rahane in the mega auction for Rs 1.50 crore and now there is speculation that he might lead KKR in IPL 2025.
Ajinkya Rahane is an Indian cricketer and a former Test captain and vice- captain of the Indian team. As a batsman, he has played for Indian in all formats of the game. Currently he represents Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and could now lead Kolkata Knights Riders as their captain. An experienced player who has played for Mumbai, India and several franchises, Rahane will now play for the defending champions Kolkata Knights Riders. In recent times, he has been a consistent run-score and could prove to be an excellent opening partner. It will be interesting to see how KKR utilizes him in the batting order, which also includes players like Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer and Andre Russell.
Rahane has played 185 IPL matches, scoring 4,642 runs in 171 innings at an average of 30.14. He scored a match-winning 98 runs against Kings XI Punjab and an unbeaten 103 runs against Royal challengers Bangalore. Playing for Chennai Super Kings, he scored 61 runs off 27 balls against Mumbai Indians. Additionally, he played a crucial role in helping Mumbai win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
