Gujarat Giants have appointed Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner as the captain for the upcoming season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The all-rounder has won the Belinda Clark Award twice and played a crucial role in Australia’s gold medal victory at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She was also the player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup.
Since the beginning of the league, Gardner has been an integral part of Gujarat Giants. In the last two seasons of the WPL, she has scored 324 runs and taken 17 wickets.
The Ashleigh Gardner said that ‘Being appointed as the captain of Gujarat Giants is a great for me. I love being a part of this team, and I am excited to lead this wonderful group in the upcoming season. We have a perfect blend of young and experienced players, and our team boasts a lot of talented Indian players. I am eager to work with the team and make our fans proud.’
Ashleigh Gardner was purchased by Gujarat Giants for RS.3.2 crore during the first Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction held in Mumbai on Monday. Before acquiring Gardner’s service, the Gujarat team was engaged in a bidding war with Mumbai Indians and UP Warriors.
“Australian woman’s cricketer Ashleigh Gardner has become the first female spinner in the world to take five wickets at the WACA at the international level. The final match of the prestigious series was played at the WACA, where her team secured a massive 83- runs victory. All- rounder Annabel Sutherland was the standout performer, and during the innings, she batted at number five, scoring a century with 110 runs off 95 balls. Later, in the bowling innings, she bowled 9 overs, conceding 34 runs and taking one wicket, for which she was named Player of the Match”.
Ashleigh Gardner’s international cricket career:
“Ashleigh Gardner has played 6 Test matches for Australia, scoring 281 runs and taking 23 wickets. In 69 One Day international (ODI) matches, she has scored 973 runs and claimed 89 wickets. In T20 International cricket, Ashleigh Gardner has played 88 matches for Australia”.
